New Gloucestershire Cancer Centre reaches planning stage

Plans for a new Gloucestershire Cancer Centre at Cheltenham General Hospital have reached the planning stage, with Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust preparing to submit an application for the scheme.
The Trust says the move marks the completion of the early design phase and is a significant step towards delivering a modern facility intended to expand and improve cancer services for patients across Gloucestershire.
The current cancer facilities at Cheltenham General Hospital are more than 25 years old. Hospital leaders say they now need modernisation to meet rising demand and changing patient needs.
What the new centre would include
According to the Trust, the new centre is expected to provide more welcoming clinical and treatment spaces, access to digital consultations to reduce the need for travel, a dedicated support centre for patients and families, improved access to wrap-around support services, and peaceful therapeutic gardens.
The plans are intended to create a more patient-centred environment and improve the experience of people affected by cancer across the county and wider region.
Fundraising close to £12m target
The project is being supported by Cheltenham and Gloucester Hospitals Charity’s Big Space Cancer Appeal. Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust says £9.7 million has so far been raised towards a £12 million target, following donations from thousands of people across the county.
Over the coming months, the Trust expects to appoint a contractor to work with the project team on detailed design work, including room layouts, interior design, décor and the overall look and feel of the building.
Patients, staff and partners will continue to be involved as the scheme develops. More than 1,000 patients, carers and members of the public have already shared views to help shape the plans, including input on future naming and other aspects of the centre.
The Trust said it looked forward to working with communities and colleagues as the project moves into the next stages of design and delivery.
